Demographics: Who Are Your Potential Customers?

When you begin to strategize creating a product, it’s important to keep the needs and desires of your potential customers in mind. This will inform your direction with your product. But who are these potential customers?

Obviously your blog readers are some of them. But do you know who they really are?

You don’t need exact data to know the demographics of your readers. But it’s a good idea to give some thought to your blog readers and to get a sense of who they are.

One way to do this is to look at the comments on your blog. Are they written mostly by men or mostly by women? What do think the age-range might be? What about education? Make some notes about the people who are already reading your blog.

Another approach to identifying your potential customers is to imagine two ideal readers, Jane and Joe (or whatever names you want to give them).

Imagine your ideal reader and answer the following questions:

  • Where does he/she live?
  • What does he/she enjoy?
  • What kind of education has he/she had?
  • What kind of work does he/she do?
  • What kind of income does he/she have?
  • Does he/she have kids?
  • How old is he/she?

Once you’ve gone through this exercise, you’ll have a sense of who your audience is. You can trust your intuition on this (it’s usually pretty accurate). You can also survey your current readers with SurveyMonkey.com.

Understanding demographics is important. Ask about these in your survey, and ask some strategic questions designed to get feedback on whether your readers will actually buy your product idea.
